Dr. Hogly Wogly's in the San Fernando Valley has become a defining part of Los Angeles’ barbecue scene, even though it bills itself as Tyler, Texas–style BBQ. It’s especially appealing for people who love barbecue but don’t want to (or can’t) cook it themselves.

The menu is extensive, featuring spare ribs, center-cut spare ribs, beef ribs, brisket, chicken, links, and more. Two barbecue sauces—mild and spicy—are served on the table rather than directly on the meat, letting you control the flavor. Classic sides include potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans, and macaroni salad, and unlike many BBQ spots where either the meat or the sides suffer, both are solid here. They also serve a good sweet potato pie, though one personal tip is to skip having it warmed up.

Portions are generous, and leftovers are common. The restaurant’s distinctive doggie bags are part of its quirky charm: servers carry rolls of plastic bags on their aprons, similar to the ones used for picking up after a dog. They scoop your leftovers into these bags, tie them off, and then place them into a paper bag. While the image might be a bit odd, it’s become a memorable and characteristic part of the Dr. Hogly Wogly’s experience.
