The Freedom Grill

Freedom Grill FG-100
The Freedom Grill FG-100

While at SEMA, I came across the subject matter of a good BBQ post. Who would have thought that you could find a BBQ related topic at an automotive trade show? The Freedom Grill is the self-proclaimed “official grill of tailgating” that mounts to your vehicle’s tow hitch. The grill is attached to swing-out arm that locks in place for travel and swings out away from you vehicle for cooking. They are perfect for tailgating and camping. These gas grills are available in two models, the FG-100 (listed on their webite for $899, but I found it at Home Depot for $569. ), their first and most popular grill and the new and sporty FG-50 ($299). For all of you that shop locally and think globally, Freedom Grill, Inc. is located here in the Southern California town of Poway.

BBQ at SEMA

brother\'s BBQ
I had some more BBQ today over at SEMA show. I went over the World Famous Brothers Barbeque food booth where they served hickory-smoked brisket that is prepared in a Southern Pride smoker. It’s nice to find a BBQ vendor that uses a real smoker; they usually just use a grill and call it BBQ. I ordered the shredded BBQ brisket, which ended up being way better than the BBQ pork sandwich I had earlier this week. The sauce was more flavorful and there was good smoke flavor in the meat. I was pretty hungry, so by the time I found a seat the sandwich was gone. Sorry, no photo ☹.

Which wood to use for your BBQ?

Pairing smoking wood with meat can be trickier than coupling wine with dinner… in some instances, downright difficult. What do you use when you have the choice of pear or maple for your brisket? To take some of the confusion out of the endless possibilities the CBBQA (California Barbecue Association) has compiled a list of common (and not so common) woods used for smoking and meats for which they are suited.

More BBQ in Las Vegas

SEMA BBQ
I was at the SEMA show today in Las Vegas and after a day of walking around and seeing the sights I was pretty hungry. What is there to eat at a trade show? Another convention center hot dog on a dry and stale bun sounds good, no? I noticed some BBQ grills fired up outside, so I had no other option but to go over and to see what was cooking.
